Introducing The ForesterTools Plugin

Streamlining QGIS Forestry Workflows

As forestry projects grow increasingly complex, professionals in the field need tools that not only meet their needs but also evolve with them. That’s why I built ForesterTools. A plugin for QGIS specifically designed to streamline workflows, eliminate repetitive tasks, and enhance efficiency.

ForesterTools isn’t just another generic GIS tool. It’s built by a forester, for foresters, leveraging my years of experience in forestry and GIS to deliver novel solutions that solve real-world problems.

Why QGIS?

QGIS was the natural choice for building this toolset. The open-source nature of the software means it’s accessible to everyone, and fully customizable. Open-source software is important to me because it allows innovation to thrive, unrestrained by proprietary barriers. It’s also what the global forestry and ecology community overwhelmingly relies on for its flexibility and extensibility.

Why I Built ForesterTools

When I first started working in forestry, I quickly realized that the existing tools were not designed for the unique challenges of forestry workflows. Too many hours were wasted performing manual processes that could easily be automated. And as tasks grew more complex, the need for a streamlined, efficient toolset became obvious.

ForesterTools was built to address several core problems:

  1. Speed and Efficiency: Eliminating core repetitive tasks through automation so you can focus on what really matters—fieldwork and decision-making.
  2. Accessibility: Built on QGIS, making it available to anyone, anywhere, without costly licensing fees.
  3. Accuracy: Enhancing precision through tools tailored specifically for forestry workflows.
  4. Scalability: Whether you’re managing a small woodland or conducting large-scale forestry operations, ForesterTools scales to your needs.

Who It’s For

ForesterTools is for:

  • Foresters looking to optimize their QGIS workflows.
  • Land Managers who need efficient, accurate tools for planning and reporting.
  • Consultants and Researchers conducting forestry-related spatial analysis.
  • Agencies and Organizations aiming to streamline their mapping and analysis processes.

Whether you’re preparing a comprehensive forest management plan, or monitoring land use changes, ForesterTools was built with your needs in mind.

What to Expect from ForesterTools

This plugin includes a small suite of customized tools designed to optimize forestry workflows. Features include:

  • 🔍 Streamlined Map Creation: Save time by generating high-quality maps with standardized styles and layouts.
  • 🌳 Streamlined Decision Making: Edit and view shapefile area distributions instantly. Extract and export shapefile data to Microsoft Excel for standardized reporting with ease.
  • 🧩 Customisation Options: Contact me for bespoke tool development.
  • 📅 Future-Proofing: ForesterTools will continue to grow and evolve based on user feedback and evolving forestry practices.

The Ecosyn Mission

ForesterTools is part of something much bigger. Through Ecosyn, my goal is to create tools that empower the global ecology and forestry community. It’s about helping others be more effective in their work, reducing friction, and freeing up time for what really matters—creating a positive impact on the world’s ecosystems and spending more time in nature.

The best part? The base version of ForesterTools will be completely free. My vision is to make effective, user-friendly tools accessible to everyone, so we can make a difference, together.

Stay tuned for more updates as I continue building and refining ForesterTools. Next week, I’ll be diving into the specific features of the toolset and how they can transform your workflows.

  1. Hi Mark. This looks really promising. I’ve been trying to work on some basic pyQGIS programming myself to simplify some of my reporting workflows and appreciate the effort that must go into creating something like this. Well done.

    1. Hey Edward! Thank you for your comment, all feedback is greatly appreciated. This toolset is the result of a 2 year endeavour with many late nights. To hear it will relieve the frustrations of others is music to my ears! I look forward to your feedback when the tool goes live next month. I hope to hear from you soon!
